Freight forwarders in the distribution of coronavirus vaccine

Several Covid-19 vaccines have given positive results: those from Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna and AstraZeneca. They have to respect the supply chain, with the special aspect of cold storage, especially for Pfizer. To maintain the temperature and secure the transport, freight forwarders play a major role.

Even if freight forwarders already work with pharmaceutical sector, the great novelty is the large volume of vaccines to be distributed. The International Air Transport Association estimates 8,000 full 747 flights for a single dose vaccine for 7.8 billion people.

The cold chain remains the big challenge for all involved actors. Airfreight is the fastest way of transportation of vaccines, but multimodal service involving air, ocean and truck, is an option.
